The ARAKHEL project (identification no. 101254762 – ARAKHEL – CERV-2025-DAPHNE), co-funded by the European Union through the CERV – Daphne Program, aims to improve access to specialized protection and support services for Roma women who are victims of gender-based violence and domestic violence. The project is implemented in Greece, Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina and addresses persistent issues affecting Roma women, such as limited access to support services, a lack of information regarding rights and available protection mechanisms, low levels of trust in institutions, and the persistence of patriarchal norms that contribute to the tolerance of violence against women.
The overall objective of the project is to develop effective and accessible mechanisms for prevention, identification, and support for Roma women who are victims of gender-based violence. To this end, ARAKHEL aims to increase the availability and accessibility of specialized services, strengthen the capacity of Roma mediators to act as facilitators of access to services, raise awareness among Roma women regarding their rights, and promote attitudinal changes within Roma communities regarding the acceptance and combating of violence against women.
To achieve these objectives, the project includes research activities and the exchange of best practices among partner organizations, through the analysis of existing support models for Roma victims of violence and the identification of solutions tailored to their needs. In addition, a training program will be developed and implemented for at least 100 Roma mediators, who will acquire specific skills in supporting victims and informing communities. A central element of the project is the establishment and development of Anti-GBV Support Centers in partner countries, as well as the strengthening of existing services. At the same time, information and awareness campaigns will be implemented targeting Roma women, local communities, and decision-makers to promote zero tolerance for violence and increase the use of protection services.
Within the project, the SASTIPEN Association – Roma Center for Health Policies contributes to the implementation of activities in Romania, being involved in research, training Roma mediators, organizing community activities, and disseminating results. Leveraging its extensive experience in providing integrated services and working with vulnerable Roma communities, SASTIPEN facilitates Roma women’s access to support services and promotes collaboration among communities, authorities, and service providers.
By developing a replicable model of support centers, strengthening the skills of Roma mediators, increasing awareness among Roma women, and promoting more inclusive public policies, the ARAKHEL project contributes to the creation of sustainable protection mechanisms and the promotion of equal opportunities, social inclusion, and the fundamental rights of Roma women.
